If you’re a Bella Coco regular, you might remember last year I featured a beautiful crochet cushion pattern from guest designer Nihal. The Anthropologie Inspired Crochet Cushion was, and still is, a super popular design and I know how many of you loved it. So, I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome designer Nihal of Topknotch Crochet back to Bella Coco with a beautiful new crochet cushion cover design.

Taking inspiration from Aztec motifs and designs, this pretty crochet pillow pattern is perfect for adding some sun-drenched vibes to your living room or bedroom. Using Nihal’s signature bobbles, this cushion is the idea companion for her previous pattern, so why not hook up a pair to freshen up your home décor this Spring?

MATERIALS & TOOLS
Yarn: Alize cotton gold (Weight: 2/Sport– 3.53oz, 361 yds) in: Cream, 2 skeins; Candlelight, 1 skein; Khaki Melange, 1 skein.
Hook: 3.5mm crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry Needle

YARN SUBSTITUTES
This cushion is made from a lightweight cotton yarn. One of the key characteristics of cotton yarn is that it creates quite a sturdy, firm and inflexible fabrics that’s perfect for cushions and other homeware as it’s hardwearing and doesn’t lose shape easily.
This does mean that substituting the yarn should consider that fact. Acrylic isn’t firm enough, so I would recommend sticking to cotton where possible.
Good substitutes include; Yarn and Colors Favorite, MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton and Schachenmayr Catania.
GAUGE
Front 4” (10 cm) = 18 stitches x 22 rows in sc
Back 4” (10 cm) = 20 stitches x 20 rows in sc
NOTES
The pattern is written in US terms
Chain one is not considered as a stitch through out this pattern
Make sure to keep the count of 73 stitches per row through out this pattern
I will be referring to Cream as Colour A, Candlelight as Colour B and Khaki Melange as Colour C.
I recommend that for Colour A and B you use colours that don’t have too much contrast so that you don’t have a dark shadow under your base. and if you want to create contrast you can use colour C for that.
The front and back pieces may have different measurements. However they both have 73 stitches and 73 rows so make sure to match up the stitches when joining them together with a single crochet seam.
I like to make my cushion covers a little bit smaller than my cushion, especially if the yarn has a little bit of a stretch, so that the pillowcase fits perfectly without any loose areas or gaps.
Here is a video tutorial showing you how to switch colours within one row. I used row 37 from the pattern in the video to show how to use three colours within one row.
CROCHET TERMS
Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook
Single Crochet (sc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops.
Bobble Stitch (bo): Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops as if you are doing the first part of a double crochet (DC) (2 loops on the hook); repeat it until you have 5 HDC on your hook and 1 initial loop (total 6 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through all 6 loops (1 loop on the hook – pull pretty tight, so your bobble really pops up)
Mini Bobble Stitch (mini bo): Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, pull yarn through two loops as if you are doing the first part of a double crochet (DC) (2 loops on the hook); repeat one more time so that you have 2 HDC on your hook and 1 initial loop (total 3 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

AZTEC CROCHET CUSHION COVER PATTERN
Front:
With a 3.5 mm hook and colour A chain 74.
Although in the first 6 rows and the last 6 rows, You won’t need to change colours. I Recommend that you work your Sc stitches over colour B yarn. So that you have consistency in the weight of your whole piece, Since you will do this anyways in the rest of the pattern.
Row 1. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each stitch in the row, chain 1 and turn
Row 2-6. Sc in the very first stitch and all the remaining stitches, chain 1 and turn
Row 7. Sc in the first 22 stitches, Switch to colour B, *bo, sc * repeat from * to * 13 more times, one more bo in the next stitch. Switch to colour A sc to the end of the row. Ch 1, turn
Row 8. Sc across the row, chain 1 and turn

The next few rows you will need to attach colour C. I recommend that you don’t work your middle section of bos and mini bos over colour C. Since if you did it will give the middle section a shadow and weight that is different from the rest of the piece. So I recommend that you leave it then pick it up again when you need it at the end of the row (as you see in the picture). Also you will have to cut it and re-attach it again every other row. Finishing
Seaming: Holding two panels together with right sides facing out, Single crochet the two pieces together (as you see in this video).
Make sure that you are matching the front and back panels’ stitches and rows when you are stitching them together.
After you’ve stitched around 3 sides, insert the pillow form and continue with the 4th side.
When you insert the pillow you might have some difficulty joining the 4th side together.
KEEP ALIGNING THE STITCHES TOGETHER
Make 10 (2“/5 cm) tassels and attach 5 to each side.
