Crochet is a wonderfully varied craft. There are literally hundreds of crochet stitches to learn and love. From lush lace to wonderfully dense, knit-style fabrics – there isn’t much crochet can’t do. But, this variety can sometimes be confusing. It can be tricky to ID the stitch you’ve fallen in love with. One of the most common crossovers is between the puff stitch, bobble stitch and popcorn stitch. All designed to create a fun texture, these bobbled beauties are SO difficult to tell apart…
It’s such a common trouble, that I actually wrote a blog on the differences between the three back in 2018. If you’re wondering what the differences are between the three stitches, you should check that out, Puff, Bobble and Popcorn Stitches.
You can also catch up with the first part of this series, the Puff Stitch.

BOBBLE STITCH INSTRUCTIONS
- BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION
Make an even number of chains and then crochet a row of double crochet starting in the 2nd chain from the hook.
Chain 1, turn the work and do a double crochet in the base of chain 1. This helps to build a straight edge at the side of the work.
Each of these stitches will be performed from the wrong side of the work. This means that your stitches will be pushed away from you. Please follow this rule unless a pattern advises you differently.
- BEGIN BOBBLE STITCH
For this stitch you will yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through two stitches. this process will be repeated 5 times and you will end up with 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all of the loops on the hook.
Double crochet (US-Single) into the next stitch. Repeat your bobble stitch and double crochet to the end of the row. You will end on a double crochet.
You must then chain 1 and turn. Double crochet into the base of the chain one and into every stitch of the row. Chain 1 and turn. You will now repeat the bobble stitch row.
