This is a pattern that’s been requested so much and I am thrilled to be able to share it with you. So, grab your cuppa and your hook and let’s get working on this classic British homeware..the crochet Tea Cosy!

MATERIALS & TOOLS
Yarn: DK yarn in two colours (100g of each). I suggest Stylecraft Special DK.
Hook: 4.5mm
Scissors
Darning needle
The colours should complement each other, but still be visibly different. Here are a few of my fave combos!

This crochet tea cosy pattern is written in UK terms.
TERMS & ABBREVIATIONS
Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook
Beginning Cl (BegCl): Ch 3, tr2tog in same space
Cl (Cl): same as tr3tog in same space. (with 4 loops on hook at end)
Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops.
Skip (sk)
Stitch(es) (st(s))

Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch and loop on hook
Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), (yarn over, draw through 2 loops) twice.
Treble Crochet 2 Stitches Together (tr2tog): Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, insert into next stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Treble Crochet 3 Stitches Together (tr3tog): Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, insert into next stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over, insert into next stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all 4 loops on hook.

PATTERN
With the Main colour
Create a slip knot. Ch 4, ss in first ch to form a circle.
Round 1: Ch 3, tr2tog (BegCl made), [ch 2, Cl] 4 times, ch 2, sl st to top of BegCl. (5 Cl, 5 ch-2 sps)
Round 2: Ch 3, *ch 2, (Cl, ch 2, Cl) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, ss to third ch of beginning ch. (10 Cls, 10 ch-2 sps)
Round 3: BegCl, ch 3, Cl in same sp, *ch 2, (Cl, ch 3, Cl) in next ch-sp; repeat from * around, ch 2, ss to BegCl. (20 Cls, 10 ch-2 sps, 10 ch-3 sps)
Round 4: Ch 3, *ch 2, Cl in next ch-sp; repeat from * around, ch 2, tr2tog in last sp, ss to third ch of beginning ch (counts as last Cl). (20 Cls, 20 ch-2 sps)
Fasten off
From this point on, all rows will begin on the same side of the circle, keeping the right side facing at all times. With same yarn, reattach yarn in next ch-sp, ch 3.
Add Stitch Marker to indicate beginning of row (also referenced as handle starting point once there is another separation made for the spout).
Handle Row 1: Ch 2, [Cl in next ch-sp, ch 2] 18 times, ch 3, ss in next ch-sp. Fasten off.
Handle Row 2: Attach yarn at SM, ch 3, Cl in same first ch-sp, [ch 2, Cl in next ch-sp] 7 times, [ch 2, (Cl, ch 2, Cl) in next ch-sp] two times, [ch 2, Cl in next ch-sp] 8 times, ch 2, Cl in last ch-sp, ch 3, ss in same sp. Fasten off. (8 Cls, then 2 increase sections, then 9 Cls; 21 total Clusters)
Next, we will create another separation in the row to make room for the spout.
Spout Row 1: Attach yarn to ch-3 at beginning of previous row, ch 5, Cl in next ch-sp, [(Cl, ch 2, Cl) in next ch-sp, ch 2] twice, Cl in next ch-sp, ch 3, ss into same sp. Fasten off. Skip 4 Cls on previous row (you’re skipping the two increase Cl sections), reattach yarn to next ch-sp, ch 3, Cl in same sp, *ch 2, (Cl, ch 2, Cl) in next sp, ch 2, Cl in next sp; repeat from * across, ch 5, ss into top of ch-3 from previous row. Fasten off.
Spout Row 2: Attach yarn to handle starting point. Ch 3, Cl in first sp, [ch 2, Cl in next sp] to end of row at spout opening, ch 5, ss to top of ch-3 from previous row. Fasten off. Reattach yarn to top of ch-3 on other side of spout opening. Ch 5, [Cl in next sp, ch 2] to end of row working last Cl in ch-5 sp at end, ch 3, ss in same sp. Fasten off.
With Contrasting Colour, attach to handle starting point.
Spout Row 3: Ch 4, [Cl in next sp, ch 1] to end of row at spout opening working last Cl in ch-5 sp, ch 3, ss in same sp, Fasten off. Reattach yarn to top of ch-3 on other side of spout opening, ch 3, Cl in same sp, [ch 1, Cl in next sp] to end of row working last Cl in ch-2 sp before last Cl, ch 4, ss to top of ch-3 at end of previous row.
Spout Row 4: Attach yarn to handle starting point. Ch 3, Cl in same sp, [ch 1, Cl in next sp] across to spout opening working last Cl in ch-1 sp before last Cl, ch 4, ss to top of ch-3 at end of previous row. Fasten off. Reattach yarn to top of ch-3 on other side of spout opening, ch 4, [Cl in next sp, ch 1] to end of row working last Cl in ch-4 sp at end of row, ch 3, ss in same ch-4 sp. Fasten off.
Next, we will work across the spout opening.
With Main Color, reattach to ch-3 at handle starting point.
Row 5: Ch 3, Cl in same sp as joining ch 3, [ch 1, Cl in next sp] across to spout opening working last Cl in ch-4 sp at end of row, ch 6, Cl in first sp on other side of spout opening, [ch 1, Cl in next sp] across working last Cl in top of final ch-3 of previous row, ch 3, ss in same sp. Fasten off.
Row 6: Reattach to ch-3 at handle starting point. Ch 2, dc in each Cl and each ch-sp across to ch-6 sp, work 4 dc in ch-6 sp, dc in each Cl and ch-1 sp to end of row working last dc in top of ch-3 of previous row. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends.
Construction/Joining
Pompom: Use either a pompom maker, or your fingers to create a pompom. If you need instructions, this tutorial may help.
Attach pompom to top of tea cosy.
Attach button to very last row at bottom of cozy, weave in ends.
Attach cosy to teapot and button bottom row.
