The Bobble Stripe Crochet Blanket is a pattern that’s incredibly close to my heart. I started crocheting this baby blanket then put it down for about a year before picking it back up again when I was pregnant. This crochet blanket was actually the first thing I made for my little girl, so you can see why it’s such a personal pattern.
It’s definitely one of my favourites crochet patterns. I find the act of getting the stripes, bobbles and colours in the right place takes just the right amount of focus to make this a magically mindful make. Suitable for all skill levels and I also have a video tutorial to help you get started alongside the free pattern or there is the option to purchase a printable PDF, all the details are listed below.
MATERIALS & TOOLS
We’re going to be using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in 5 different colours. If you’re choosing your own colour scheme, Colour A should be the colour you would like your bobbles to be. I suggest that this colour is a neutral or lighter colour for this.
The sample was made in: Cream, Duck Egg, Clematis, Parma Violet and Wisteria from Stylecraft Special DK you can find these colours at Bella Coco Store found on LoveCrochet.com

NOTES
This pattern will use UK terms. If you want a printable pattern, with easy-to-read table and a chart I highly recommend you buy the low-cost PDF.
If you are watching the video tutorial and altering your sizing: If you are doing any other multiple of 24 (not including 96+1 like I have done in the sample) The bobble row must do 4 half trebles, change colour on the 5th half treble and then bobble on the 6th. This 6 stitch pattern will repeat all the way along. Do not bobble in the last stitch of that row. If you’re unsure about this, please purchase the PDF as this has been altered.
Turning chains DO NOT class as a stitch. You will find instruction of how may chains to work for each row in the pattern below.
The bobble stitch is worked slightly differently in this pattern. Please ensure that you are pushing the bobble stitch to the RS (right side) of your work.
CROCHET TERMS
Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook.
Double Crochet (s): dc (s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Half Treble Crochet(s): htr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through all three loops.
Treble Crochet (s): tr (s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Crab Stitch (cs): reverse dc. Working in the opposite direction. Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Half Treble with Bobble row: With selected contrasting colour (this will be the same colour as you have used in the previous row) Ch2 (does not class as a st) and ** work 4 htr.
Change to Colour A with your next htr, to do this you should: Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop, drop the contrasting colour (you will be carrying this through the work) and pull Colour A through all three loops on the hook.
With Colour A, work your bobble stitch. *Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull up loop on the hook; repeat from * 3 more times. You will have 9 loops on your hook. Drop colour A (you will be carrying this through the work) and with contrasting colour, yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
Push your bobble to the right side of the work. Repeat from ** to the end of the row replacing the last bobble stitch with a half treble crochet
Granny Row 1 and 2: You will be working into the spaces BETWEEN the stitches here rather than into the top of the stitch.
Ch3 (does NOT class as a stitch). Tr into first sp, *Skip 1 sp and work 2 tr into the next sp) Repeat from * to second to last stitch. Tr into remaining stitch. Turn.
Ch3, tr in first sp. *2 tr into next space; repeat from * to the second to last sp. Tr in top of ch-3 from previous row. Tie off.

READING THE PATTERN
The pattern below is displayed in a chart in the PDF. This is the simplest way to keep track of what colours to use and which stitch you will be working. If you would like a chart, please purchase the low-cost, printable PDF in my shop.
You will also find information on how many chains to work for each row.
If you are sizing up the pattern, simply start again from the beginning.
Using yarn A create a foundation chain in multiples of 24.

Row 4: Stitch: half treble with bobble Beginning Chain: chain 2 Colour: C & A
Row 5: Stitch: double crochet Beginning Chain: chain 1 Colour: C
Row 6: Stitch: double crochet Beginning Chain: chain 1 Colour: B
Row 7: Stitch: half treble Beginning Chain: chain 2 Colour: A

Row 35: Stitch: granny row 1 Beginning Chain: chain 3 Colour: E
Row 36: Stitch: granny row 2 Beginning Chain: chain 3 Colour: E
Repeat from Row 1 if desired.
BORDER
Round 1: Attach colour A with a ss into and corner sp. *(dc, ch1, dc) in corner space. Dc evenly across edge until you reach the next corner sp: repeat from * around and ss in first st.
NOTE: When working across the raw edges, I suggest one stitch around the post of the Double Crochet and Half Treble rows and two stitches around the post of the Treble rows.
Round 2: Ch 1, dc in same stitch. *(dc, ch1, dc) into ch-1 corner sp. Dc in each stitch to the next corner: repeat from * two times. (dc, ch1, dc) into ch-1 corner sp. Dc in each stitch up to first st from the round. Ss in first st to join.
Round 3: Work 1cs in to each st around. Join with a ss. Tie off and sew in ends

I made a sneaky start on the bobble stitch pattern last week and am loving it. Just a question: on the HTr row after the Granny rows, the pdf pattern says to skip the first Tr but the free pattern on line does not mention this and the videos don’t show you doing it. I am now following the pdf and that works fine, but realise that not everyone will have the pdf Does that make sense?

I’ve just got to row 35 and I feel that it should be colour E not D. I might be wrong

April 23, 2020 at 8:06 amThe colour layout in the pattern can be used just as a guide, so if you feel you would rather use colour E in this row there is not reason why you shouldn’t

April 28, 2020 at 7:18 pmHi. In the pattern row 1 says “chain 2, start in the 3rd chain from the hook”. But in the video tutorial it’s chain 1 and work into the 2nd stitch from hook?

I have just started the my 2nd row of bobble stitches & it is on the back of my work & not on the front?
Am following the pattern above but after row 9 should there be another row in between (which would of been the foundation chain)

September 10, 2020 at 8:36 amThis is a really difficult question to answer, it would depend on the size you want, the yarn you are using, your hook size and your tension. If you start your chains and keep going until you get to the width you want and then carry on from their. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help but wish you luck with your blanket 🙂

June 6, 2021 at 1:08 pmHi Heidi You’re very welcome, I’m glad you like it You will need 5 100g balls of DK weight for this pattern; if you’re choosing your own colours I’d recommend one of them to be a light colour such as white or cream. You should be able to make the blanket using either tutorial as long as you don’t mix and match.
