Happy Granny Square Day! I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that Granny Square Day is my favourite crochet celebration. I can never resist a G Square! In fact, I’ve written so many blog posts about granny squares…I’ve lost count! Luckily, I don’t have to keep track of them all because, this handy blog post does it for me. Want to catch up on all my granny patterns? Check out my Great Granny Square Master List.

In celebration of granny squares, I wanted to revisit a post from a few years ago from fellow granny square enthusiast Kate from Jellybean Junction. I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve also put together a small community showcase towards the end of images shared by the Bella Coco Crochet community using the #bellacococrochet.

You can Crochet with Bella Coco

Hi I’m Kate Rowell and I’m the crochet designer behind Jellybean Junction. I first picked up my hook in January 2015 and haven’t looked back since, it’s my passion and my creative outlet.

Jellybean Junction has been up and running for about 4 years now, I started by selling ready made crochet blankets, hats and home décor but soon realised that pattern design was what I enjoyed most, I released my first pattern in February 2017.

My love for bright colours and rainbows is reflected in my work and my designs are simple and classic – mainly aimed at the beginner/intermediate crocheters. You can find my work on Instagram and on my website.

A granny square is no longer considered to be old fashioned, thanks to recent fashion trends and crochet becoming more popular the humble granny square is now very trendy! I find it to be a very calming, relaxing type of crochet with endless possibilities.

Granny squares come in all shapes and sizes and can be used in a number of ways, if you are looking for some granny square inspiration then look no further – below you’ll find a list of my favourite granny square projects…

Simple granny squares sewn together and wrapped around a plain lampshade – make basic 4 round granny squares using scraps of cotton yarn in bright colours, join them together and add a crochet pom pom edge. Attach them to a lampshade using a glue gun.

Crochet a giant granny square using 3 balls of cream dk yarn, use 5 bright colours to add a pretty border. A perfect project for a beginner!

Top tip – Flip your granny square over at the end of each round to keep it nice and square!

Granny squares are works of art! Make a square using your favourite coloured cotton yarns (the pictured pattern is called the Ribbed Cross Granny Square). Block the square using a 50/50 mix of pva glue and water, mount it on plain card using a glue gun and then use a box style frame.

By making granny squares that are half one colour and half another colour you can create an infinite number of patterns. The squares pictured are Solid Granny Squares made with 100% cotton yarn and sewn together to form this striking arrow design.

These gorgeous 2-toned heart granny squares are so pretty! Use bright colours for the hearts and a neutral pale grey outer colour.
