Happy International Crochet Day, my crafty friends. Isn’t it FAB that we get a day to celebrate our favourite hobby? Of course, if you’re like me, every day is a crochet day! So, how do you pay homage to this special day, while giving it the respect it deserves?
Here are some of my favourite ways:
Have a (socially distanced) meet-up with your crafty friends. Spend some time crocheting together and don’t forget the cake! What’s a craft meeting without it?
Wear some of your work. What could feel better than spending the day decked out in crochet goodies – whether it’s socks, a cowl or a cardie!
Crochet in public. There’s something so satisfying about sitting in the sunshine and hooking happily away. Just make sure you take a project bag with you so that you’re not racing rogue balls of yarn around the park!
Teach someone new to crochet. This is honestly my favourite suggestion for International Crochet Day. What better way to pay tribute to crochet than recruiting someone new into the fibre fold? I’m going to share some of my favourite resources and patterns to help you teach a friend how to crochet. Not only will you have the warm glow of sharing your skills…you’ve just recruited a new hooker to enjoy crochet sessions together!
So, let’s start with the basics. If you’re teaching someone to crochet, then these resources will be your BFF.

It’s a question that’s asked a LOT. How do you teach a beginner how to crochet?
The simple fact is, there’s no one-size-fits-all option, everyone learns at a different pace and with a different style. So, if your learner isn’t picking up the way you chose – try a different one! Some people learn best from videos, others from reading and others from doing. It’s all about practice, patience and perseverance.
I’ve found that the best way to teach, is to let your beginner choose some yarn that attracts them – but steer clear of fancy yarns like tinsel or eyelash. A thick, smooth yarn like Paintbox Simply Aran or Stylecraft Special DK are ideal. It’s also better to choose a lighter colour, as it can be difficult to see stitches in very dark yarn. And finally, get the kettle on!
We learn better in a relaxed environment, so taking the pressure off with a good cuppa and a slice of cake is ideal!
