PATTERN NOTES

All instructions for this rainbow heart crochet bag are written in UK terms.

The 2ch at the beginning of each row does not count as a st and the first stitch following will be into the base of the 2ch.

SIZE

The square part of the heart measures 5in. Finished width of square to the top of one of the curves is 7in. If your initial square is larger than 5in the bag may become a bit floppy so I’d recommend going down half or a whole hook size.

Strap length: 45in, this includes the part that joins the 2 sides. This fits my nearly 7 year old perfectly so you may need it to be longer or shorter depending on the wearer.

CROCHET TERMS

Chain Stitch (ch): Insert hook, yarn over, pull though loop on the hook.

Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through chain and loop on the hook.

Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through chain stitch (2 loops on the hook), yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook

Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over, insert into chain space, yarn over, pull through, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Double Treble Crochet (dtr): Yarn over twice, insert into chain space, yarn over, pull through, you will have four loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Repeat instructions for indicated times

Unsure of the differences between UK and US terms? Need a refresher on how to do your stitches? In my ‘How to crochet: A handy reference guide’ EBook I help you with all of these terms and you can always have them to hand! You will also get exclusive access to free video instructions. You can find my EBook HERE.

Heart Curves

Row 1: Rejoin yarn A in the 11th st in on one of the solid blue edges. Ch2 and ss it into the 2nd st
away from the starting st on the right. Work 6tr into the first st then ss in 2nd st away from starting st on the left. (Your curve should be attached to the square on both the right and left sides of the starting ch).

Row 2: ch2, ss into 2nd st away from your ch st and turn your work. Make 2tr into each st, ss into the 2nd st along from row 1 (12)

Row 3: ch2, ss into 2nd st away from your ch st and turn your work 2tr into next st, 1 tr into next st rep from to to end, ss into 2nd st along from the 2nd row (18)

Row 4: ch2, ss into 2nd st away from your ch st and turn your work 2tr into next st, 1tr into next 2 st rep from to to end, ss into 2nd st along from 3rd row (24)

Row 5: ch2, ss into 2nd st away from your ch st and turn your work 2tr into next st, 1tr into next 3 st rep from to to end, ss into 2nd st along from 4th row, this will be in the corner. Fasten off. (30)

Repeat above steps for the second heart curve. Sew in all ends.

Strap

Row 1: Using the yarn A ch8, work a tr into the 2nd stitch from the hook,
tr to end and turn work (6)

Row 2: ch2, tr into each stitch to end. Turn work. (6)

Repeat row 2 for a further 93 rows (or the desired length) and then fasten off.

Assembly

The hearts don’t have a right or wrong side so pick either one and count up from the start of the heart curve 11 stitches.

Insert your hook through the front loop only on the heart and through the side of the first row stitch at the beginning of the strap.

Make a double crochet through these stitches and repeat for a further 10 stitches to the square part of the heart.

Make double crochet stitches evenly down the sides until you reach the bottom point where the rainbow is. I made 14dc down the straight side of each square but depending on your tension you may need 1 or 2 more or less.

Make 3dc into the first st of the rainbow square then dc evenly up the other side until you reach the start of the heart curve.

Make dc into 11st of the second curve than fasten off your yarn.

Repeat for the other side of the bag and sew the unattached end of the strap to the first part you attached to the bag. Sew in ends.

This is my second time trying to do a guest post but when I reach out to them regarding questions they never respond. Frustrating.
