Let’s talk about rice. It’s versatile as heck, right? It makes the perfect foundation for SO MANY meals. Let me introduce you to its crochet counterpart, the rice stitch. Equally as versatile, this unique and textured stitch is amazing for adding detail to your crochet projects. It might not be as delicious as rice, but it’s JUST as great as a foundation pattern for your crochet.

MATERIALS & TOOLS NEEDED

Yarn:  I used Bella Coco Crochet Super-Soft Chunky yarn which was an exclusive yarn found in my Crochet Society boxes.

Hook: Hook to match yarn and your desired gauge. I used a 5.5mm.

This pattern gives you the basic principles for the rice stitch, designed to help you create your own projects.

CROCHET TERMS

Chain (ch): Yarn over, pull through one loop on hook

Half Treble Crochet (htr): Yarn over and insert your hook into the chain or stitch, yarn over and pull through (you will have three loops on the hook) yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook

Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over, draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), (yarn over, draw through 2 loops) twice.

Slip Stitch (ss): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch and loop on hook

Stitch(es) (st(s))

Front Post Treble(s): FPtr(s): Yarn over, insert hook around post of stitch from front to back, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Back Post Treble(s): BPtr(s): Yarn over, insert hook around post of stitch from back to front, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

RICE STITCH PATTERN

Work your chain to an odd number

Row 1: Working in the spine of the ch, Tr in 3rd ch from the hook. Tr in each ch to the end. Turn.

Row 2: Ch1, htr in 1st st. *fptr around next stitch, bptr around next st; repeat from * until you have 2 sts remaining. Fptr, Htr in top of turning ch. Turn.

Repeat row 2 until you reach your desired height.
