Are you ready for all of the juicy details? As you might have guessed from the name, the latest Bella Coco Crochet Along is going to focus on a revamped version of my ever-popular Sunburst Granny Square. This crochet along will begin on May 8th, when I’ll publish all of the info and updated pattern for the granny square on my blog. There’s also a fun twist, this Sunburst Crochet Along will be a Mix & Match CAL! So what does that mean?
MIX & MATCH?
While the pattern is focused around the Sunburst Granny Square, I’ll also be releasing a series of video & written tutorials that cover different joining methods and borders. So, you can pick whichever one you like the best – which means your blanket will be unique to you! Cool, right?
I hope you’ll join me for this CAL. We had such a wonderful time working on the Bobble Stripe Blanket together and then the four part Cosy CAL that I wanted to stick to the relaxed feeling of the previous CALs. The aim is to work together on creating a cosy space where we can crochet and chat as a group – with no specific deadlines.
As before, we’ll have a dedicated Cosy Club once per week to discuss our work on the Sunburst Crochet Along. We’ll be meeting at 12pm (BST) on a Tuesday.
WHAT IS THE COSY CLUB?
Let’s start with the basics, the Cosy Club is a space I’ve been hosting weekly on the Bella Coco Crochet Facebook group on Tuesdays at 12pm (UK time). I created it because I wanted people to have a space to escape their stresses and worries and also to connect with other crochet addicts. I know that isolation can feel lonely (even when you’re not physically alone) so the Cosy Club is a safe space to chat, share patterns and admire crochet projects. We’re in this together and it’s more important than ever to have a space to chat with your fellow crocheters.
WHO WILL HOST THE CAL?
As you might know, I’ve recently given birth to a beautiful little baby girl, so I’ll have my hands a bit too full to manage this Sunburst Crochet Along by myself, so I’ll be handing the reins over to Team Bella Coco to host the Cosy Club sessions. I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know them.

Hi, I’m Nicola and I’m the brand photographer and video editor for Bella Coco. I’m the newest member of Sarah-Jayne’s team at Bella Coco, I started in January 2021 and I absolutely love it! I photograph the beautiful samples, help with the planning and styling of Bella Coco’s Instagram.
I also edit the wonderful tutorials that Sarah-Jayne films for all you lovely crocheters out there. I actually learnt how to crochet following Sarah-Jayne’s tutorials and continue to do so. I’m so excited to be joining you all during the CAL!
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO BE MAKING?
We’re going to be working on making a Sunburst Blanket together.
However this pattern is a revamped version, so I suggest waiting until the official launch on May 8th before getting started. So no sneaky early starters!
This fun Crochet Along will show you how to make the Sunburst Square and then a number of different join and border options to put it all together. Here’s the schedule for video tutorials:
8th May – The Sunburst Pattern video and blog along with ALL the details you need for the CAL.
15th May – Joining video and blog. This will cover Mattress Stitch, Whip Stitch and Invisible Stitch.
22nd May – Prepping border video and blog. This will show you how to get your blanket ready for a border.
29th May – Camel Stitch Border video and blog.
5th June – Moss Stitch Border video and blog.
WHAT ARE THE DETAILS?
The CAL will be running from May 8th-30th June. It’s a very casual affair – while the videos will be uploaded weekly, there’s no limit or pressure on how much, or how little, you manage each week. It’s all about feeling calm after all!
There will be weekly check-ins every Tuesdays at 12pm (UK time) on the Cosy Club post at Bella Coco Crochet Facebook group. I’d love to see your progress shots as well as chat about your week and the pattern together. Louise and Nicola will be hosting the weekly sessions, however I’ll try and pop in where possible.
WHAT WILL YOU NEED?
Yarn: Aran/Worsted weight yarn in four different colours. The amount you need will vary on your personal gauge and the size of the blanket you are making.
In the videos I have used: Caron Simply Soft in Orchid, Soft Green, Light Country Peach, Off White. However on the launch blog post (8th May) you will also see photographs of a blanket made by my lovely test crocheter Emma which uses Stylecraft Aran in Wisteria, Duck Egg, Pale Rose and Cream.
Hook: 5mm

I have just ordered my yarn in suitable colours that will blend in with my living room so that I can have the blanket on my sofa. The Sunburst blanket has been on my list to do for a while so I am so excited about it!

What colors would you recommend in Caron Simply Soft to be more beachy or oceany (besides the seafoam colors) ? Uhm, more blue hues if I am not clear.

May 4, 2021 at 1:02 pmHi Laura If you want to include more ocean shades you could incorporate some of the green/teal shades such as Robin’s Egg. For a beach feel you can look at shades of coral and pinks too

May 19, 2021 at 6:40 pmI meant to start on the CAL but completely forgot. I still want to be involved. One question I do have. I have so much wool stash here at home. Does the Sunburst Blanket have to be in the suggested wool or are we able to do it with our own stash of wool?

May 20, 2021 at 8:47 amHi Chris you can do the blanket with whichever yarn you wish, just be mindful that depending on what yarn and hook size you are using your blanket maybe a different size 🙂

May 23, 2021 at 8:03 amI completely completely missed the boat on the CAL, but I have some beautiful Paintbox lemon cream DK (250g left over from a knitting project) and a niece with a baby on the way, so I’d love to catch up to turn it into a baby blanket with cream and another colour or two (suggestions welcome!). Can I catch up on missed sessions? Are they recorded at all? And can I join the last sessions or is it too late? Sorry for so many questions, Thank you!

June 24, 2021 at 9:36 pmI was not able t do the CAL for 2021 and it looks like all the weekly boxes you would click on are disabled. I also tried the link above that the Bella Coco Team provided in a post above but I get the same results that all the weeks are disabled. Is there a place that these things are archived? Now that I have the time I can’t access the steps.
