If you need a quick reminder about what a CAL is….here you go!

WHAT’S A CAL?

A CAL or crochet along is where a group of people work on a large pattern or series of smaller patterns together. The pattern is released in segments, one video and blog post weekly, and there’s a space to chat about your progress, get help and generally enjoy the community feel of a group crochet project.

In the Sunburst Blanket Crochet Along the communal space will be the Cosy Club in the Bella Coco Crochet Club Facebook group. This happens at 12pm (UK time) on a Tuesday. Everyone is free to join in and crochet and chat with us.

As I’m currently looking after a tiny baby, Louise and Nicola from Team Bella Coco will be looking after you all and making sure you’re comfortable and enjoying the CAL.

PART TWO: 3 CROCHET SEWING SEAMS

MATERIALS & TOOLS

Yarn: Aran/Worsted weight yarn in four different colours. The amount you need will vary on your personal gauge and the size of the blanket you are making.

In the Sunburst Blanket Crochet Along videos I used: Caron Simply Soft in OrchidSoft GreenLight Country Peach and Off White.

These stitch samples were made in bright colours so that you can see the different stitches. When made using similar colours they will not be this visible. I just wanted you to be able to see clearly!

The beautiful blanket that you can see in the photographs used in this blog was made by my amazing test crocheter Emma and uses Stylecraft Aran in WisteriaDuck EggPale Rose and Cream.

Hook: 5mm

PATTERN NOTES

Written in UK terms.

MATTRESS STITCH

A pair of female hands is shown demonstrating how to to the mattress stitch. The swatch is purple, aqua and peach, bright colours so that the stitching is clearly demonstrated.
Mattress Stitch

Mattress stitch is great for garments or projects that need a sturdy seam, for example, shoulder seams in garments or gifted blankets. If you’re looking for a crochet blanket join that’s hardwearing, simple and strong then this is the one for you.

Can you tie shoelaces? Then you can do this stitch! Mattress stitch is similar to doing up your laces. It just takes a bit of practice to master!

Mattress Stitch

Lay 2 pieces wrong sides facing. Insert darning needle through both loops of first stitch from inside to outside of first piece.

Insert needle from inside to outside on the corresponding stitch of the second piece.

Repeat along working in each stitch.

(you may wish to work through the first and last stitches TWICE to secure)

Every few inches, lay work flat and pull on seam too secure.

WHIPSTITCH

Whipstitch

This crochet blanket join is good for joining seams which do not require to hold weight, for example an infinity scarf. I would only really suggest this for smaller-sized blankets where softness is required, like baby blankets.

With wrong sides facing, insert needle from front to back of first stitch working through both thicknesses.

Repeat for each stitch.

INVISIBLE STITCH

A pair of female hands is shown demonstrating how to to the whipstitch. The swatch is purple, aqua and peach, bright colours so that the stitching is clearly demonstrated.
Invisible Stitch

This is good if you are going different colour crochet pieces together, because the clue is in the name…it’s invisible! So, if you’ve gone for a beautifully bright rainbow blanket this is the ideal crochet blanket join for you. I would opt for joining using the lightest colour.

With wrong sides facing, insert needle from front to back working through back loops ONLY (this will be the two outermost loops as your work is laying together)

Repeat for each stitch.

(you may wish to work through the first and last stitches TWICE to secure)
