Learn to crochet the Waffle Stitch with this FREE pattern and video tutorial. The Waffle Stitch offers a beautiful modern texture making the Waffle stitch a popular choice for many projects. There are Right and Left handed video tutorials at the base of this post.
**Please note an error: you should be making your first stitch into the third chain from the hook, not the second. This will give you 26 stitches at the end**

Crochet Terms
Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over pull through stitch and loop on hook
Chain(s): ch(s):Yarn over, pull through
Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Front Post Treble(s): fpt(s): Yarn over, insert hook around post of stitch from front to back to front, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Waffle Stitch Pattern
Chain in multiples of 3, plus 4.
Row 1 – Tr in 2nd ch from hook and remaining ch stitches.
Row 2 – Ch1 and turn. Tr in first st under ch. *Fptr in next st, tr into next 2 st*, repeat from * until 2 st remaining. Fptr and tr in last st.
Row 3 – Ch1 and turn. Tr in first st under ch, *tr in next st, fptr in next 2 st*, repeat from * until 2 st remaining. Tr into last 2 st.
Repeat rows 2 and 3.
To finish, end on row 2 so wrong side is facing. Tr along each st until 2 st remaining. Tr2tog (make a tr until 2 loops remaining, make a tr in next st, pull through all 3 loops).

November 11, 2020 at 8:44 amHave you ever tried making the Waffle Stitch in two colors?
I met an elderly woman that made a waffle stitch blanket for her grandson, but she only did it by memory & couldn’t explain how she did it.
When she did the blanket, it was in black & red. When you looked at one side, the ridges were black and the centers were red. When you flipped the blanket over the ridges were red and the centers were black.
I have been looking for several years and have not found any waffle crochet patterns that looked anything like that.

November 19, 2020 at 8:09 pmHi Mary This isn’t something I’ve seen either, but I imagine you could recreate the look by using tapestry crochet – this is where you use two colours together and carry the yarns along so you can swap them to make stitches in either colour. April 27, 2022 at 5:06 pmAny idea how to increase or decrease using a waffle stitch or diamond waffle? I’d like to make a shawl that’s straight across the back, without a line down the middle. So, half of a C2C blanket, I guess.

May 1, 2022 at 3:41 pmHi Kristie It may not be possible to increase/decrease without an obvious break in these patterns due to the way they’re worked. If you wanted to increase you just need to work two stitches in one; I would do this either end on a wrong side row (so the pattern is facing away from you). To decrease you need to work two stitches together and I would also work these at either end
